In a bid to cut road accidents, drivers under the age of 24 could be facing tough new restrictions for the first six months of driving after their test. The proposal from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is calling for young drivers to learn for a year.
The group of insurers said that something must be done as an 18-year-old is three times more likely to be in a car crash than a person of middle age. The director of general insurance at the ABI, Nick Starling, said the plans are needed to stop over confident young drivers causing major catastrophes. He continued to say that the most common situation for an accident is a young driver late at night with friends in the back of the car.
Under the proposal, young people would be banned from driving after any alcohol, driving on the roads between 11pm and 4am as well as carrying extra passengers for the first six months after passing their tests.
A member of the team at Cost shares her thoughts on the proposal:
The number of road accidents being caused by young drivers in the UK is a problem that needs addressing. However the proposals from the ABI may cause a lot of controversy due to the prejudicial nature of labelling all young drivers the same and part of the problem- when in reality its not an overwhelming percentage of the young driving population causing the accidents.
